How To Make a Mexican Martini

Every Sunday for many years, my best friends and I used to go to “church” at Trudy’s, a local Tex-Mex chain, and sit on the patio, get really drunk, have a “sermon”, and then cap it with the “joining of the boobs”. It’s hard to explain, but it was a fun way to spend a Sunday. Then I guess we grew up (a little) and also Trudy’s came under new management and the drinks weren’t as strong. Boo. Not as fun. Anyway, the drink we used to always get at “church” is a Mexican Martini.

The Mexican Martini is about as popular a drink around these parts as the margarita. And like the margarita, its origins are lost to the memories of ancient bartenders and blithering drunkards. Lucky for me, Trudy’s serves up a real nice Mexican Martini. But, and this is the kicker, there’s a house rule that limits you to two of these bad boys. I would bet that at its origin, this drink was basically a big ol’ margarita served in a shaker, garnished with olives. Then people probably started getting wise to the trick and thinking, “…if this is just a big margarita…and I am cut off at two…maybe I should just order margaritas…and have eight of those.” Drunk people are smarter than you think. So then, in my fantasy history of this drink, the bartenders started thinking, “…we need to make this drink different than a margarita…so people will respect it…and stop ordering eight margaritas instead…”

So now it’s become it’s own thing and a very appreciated thing it is. If you don’t live near a Trudy’s and you’d like to try the famed Mexican Martini, well you are in luck my fine friend. Here is the “original” Trudy’s Mexican Martini recipe. Bonus: You have to SHAKE it!!!

these were good. verily good. though they made last night’s euchre tournie a bit short, given how wasted we all were…

fyi – i used diet sprite, and bottled lime juice. still tasted good. verily good.

Very good! I like mine a little more on the sour side, so I added a little more lime juice. Diet Sprite wasn’t bad either (I used that as well instead of the regular stuff). Bottoms up!

      Good one, Lauren! Thanks!

Very nice drink! I got a cocktail shaker to make this as my first and the top came off as I was shaking it! It turned out really well though, very boozy but hard to tell it. The heat of the alcohol is there, but it doesn’t burn; goes down smooth. Thanks for the great recipe!

You’re welcome, Robert! Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

I add two things to this: a splash of olive juice, and a splash of Jalepeno juice (both to taste). Yum!

Double yum, Susan! Love the jalapeno juice idea.

    Hilah,

I’m going to try your Mexican Martini recipe.

Can you (will you) recommend a brand of tequila? And if you won’t recommend a brand, can you tell me if I should I use a silver or a gold tequila?

    Thanks!

      Hi Chuck!

My tequila preference has always been silver for margaritas, hands down. A couple brands I like are Espolon and Hornitos. Hornitos should be everywhere, but try to find Espolon first. Enjoy!

This is NOT Trudy’s recipe for a Mexican Martini! There is NO orange juice in it. There is no OJ in a standard margarita either. If you’re genuinely looking for Trudy’s recipe, it’s not here. You’re best off just asking one of the bartenders who works there for the recipe- they’ll gladly tell you as one of them told me the restaurant has no proprietary rights on it. If you don’t live in Austin, get their number and call them when they open or between lunch and dinner, when its slow.

I should have just deleted your obviously trolling comment that gives absolutely nothing to the conversation in the way of real, helpful information, but allowing nuts to run around leaving inflammatory comments full of wrong information on my website is one thing I can not abide. The Trudy’s margarita does indeed have orange juice in it. I know because my friend used to be bar manager there. The only way this is different is that Trudy’s uses sweet and sour mix instead of Sprite. I prefer Sprite.

        You go girl!

Now you know I don’t think about is the original recipe because I went there a few times and it did not have orange juice in it but that was a long time ago maybe they added the orange juice later on
