HHH03 – Interview with Mel Joulwan

Episode 3 of Hilah’s Happy Hour Podcast! Mel Joulwan has been a great friend of mine for several years and she also happens to be a hugely successful paleo cookbook author. She and her husband Dave published Well Fed, Well Fed 2, and Well Fed Weeknights. In this interview, Mel and I talk about taking risks, her upcoming move to Prague, making friends in a new city, food guilt and what she’s reading now (she’s an avid reader with great taste).

Show Notes

Mel has been a guest on my cooking show a couple of times, too. For Halloween one year, we made her “Vampire-fighting (paleo) Pork Stew” and for Christmas we made her family’s Sicilian fried dough balls. Watch below!

    Hilah and Mel,

I spent a long-ish week in Prague, on vacation, in July of 1999. Visually it’s my candidate for the title of MOST GORGEOUS CITY IN EUROPE — including Paris, Rome, and St. Petersbrg, which I also know somewhat.

As far as languages were concerned, I survived in Prague on English, German, and the tiny bit of Russian that I knew.

    Loved the streetcars.

Mel: Have you seen — or do you remember — the “dancing house?” The Frank Gehry building on the right bank of the Moldau (sorry for the German — Vltava?), south of the center city. The Czechs call it “Fred and Ginger.” If you know it you know why.

Excursion: If you haven’t done so already, take the train(s) to Kutna Hora. Old silver mining town with a superb late Gothic and early Renaissance church.

    Hilah,

Please forard this to Mel. If you get the chance to visit her in Prague, do it by all means.

    Best to both of you,

    Pat Soltis
